How to Measure Bust, Waist and Hips for an Evening Dress

An evening dress size should be chosen from measurements, not from the label you usually buy. Different brands and silhouettes can fit differently. Use a flexible measuring tape, wear the undergarments you expect to use and ask someone to help keep the tape level.

Take three useful measurements

Measure the bust around its fullest point without compressing it. Measure the natural waist where your torso bends comfortably. For hips, measure around the fullest part of the seat and hips, keeping the tape parallel to the floor. Record the numbers and the unit used so centimetres and inches cannot be confused.

Match the correct chart

Use the guide relevant to the product or brand you are considering. A letter size alone is not enough to compare two designs. Check whether a chart describes body measurements or the finished garment: those are different measurements and should not be treated as equivalent.

Allow for the silhouette

A fitted skirt makes hip fit especially important, while a structured bodice needs careful bust and waist checks. Do not simply average three measurements into a size. If they fall into different columns, send all three to the support team with the product link before buying.

Should I pull the tape tightly?

Keep it comfortably close to the body without squeezing. Repeating each measurement helps catch a tilted or overly tight tape.
