Between Two Dress Sizes? What to Check Before Buying

Being between sizes is common, particularly with structured occasionwear. The right decision depends on where the dress is fitted and how it is constructed. A larger or smaller label is not automatically the better answer, and an alteration should never be assumed possible without checking.

Identify the limiting measurement

Write down which measurement falls outside the size chart. A close-fitting bodice and a flowing skirt have different priorities from an all-over fitted gown. Compare your measurements with the relevant chart, then ask for advice about the specific design instead of choosing from a general sizing rule.

Check stretch and structure

Look for information about lining, corsetry and fabric composition. A fabric that appears soft in a photograph may have a non-stretch lining underneath. Conversely, visible ruching does not prove that a dress stretches. Ask for clarification rather than estimating flexibility from the silhouette.

Discuss alterations before ordering

Beading, seams, zips and internal structure can limit alterations. A tailor needs to inspect the garment before promising a change. If timing is tight, allow space for a fitting and any agreed work. Keep the original condition intact while deciding, and read the current exchange policy before arranging alterations.

Is sizing up always safer?

No. Excess room can affect a structured neckline or shoulder fit. Ask for product-specific advice using your complete measurements.
